Start with a cutting plan, not the first line

List the finished components and label the faces that will show. Allow for blade kerfs, any damaged sheet edges and the trimming allowance your project needs. A sequence that creates one reliable reference edge early can simplify the remaining measurements. Do not assume the factory edge is straight and square enough for finished cabinetry. If the project needs matched grain across adjacent parts, mark their relationship before dividing the sheet so the layout survives the first rough cut.

Support the changing shape of the sheet

The initial full panel and the last narrow remainder present different support problems. Plan both. Keep the retained piece and cutoff supported without trapping the blade as the kerf opens. Separate rough breakdown from final sizing

For a large project, rough-cutting manageable blanks with a sensible allowance can reduce handling demands during final sizing. That allowance must come from your actual plan rather than a universal number. When the panel is already flat, supported and accurately referenced, a direct finished cut may be appropriate instead. Choose the sequence that preserves material and control. Avoid adding unnecessary passes merely because a tutorial used them; each repositioning is another chance to lose the reference or mix up the faces.

Judge the result in three directions

Check width at both ends, straightness along the cut and squareness across the edge. Then assess chipping and any core breakout separately. An edge can be smooth but tapered in width, or dimensionally correct but visibly chipped. Record which problem occurred before changing the blade, rail setting or support. For parts that will be edge-banded, a slightly different acceptance standard may apply than for an exposed veneered joint, but the required dimensions should remain explicit in the project plan.
