Usable travel is shorter than the rail

The saw needs guidance as it enters and leaves the material, so a rail's printed length is not automatically the longest cut it supports. Use the manufacturer's documented relationship for the actual system. Kreg, for example, lists a fifty-inch cutting capacity for its sixty-two-inch ACS track. That is a system-specific example, not an allowance to apply to every brand. Measure the full cut, including any diagonal, before choosing a single rail or a connected pair.

A connector does not straighten two rails by itself

Joining hardware holds the rail sections together, but alignment still needs to be established and checked using the manufacturer's method. Look for a step, kink or gap where the saw base crosses the joint. With power disconnected and the blade retracted, confirm smooth travel across that transition. Do not compensate for a poor joint by loosening the saw's guide adjustment until it wanders. Solve the rail connection first, then set the saw fit for smooth, controlled movement.

Choose between one rail and a pair honestly

A single long rail avoids a connection in the working path but requires storage, transport space and careful handling. Two shorter rails are easier to move and can serve smaller jobs, at the cost of connection setup and another alignment check. Consider how frequently you make full-length sheet cuts and whether you work in one shop or travel. The best choice depends on workflow. A long rail that is repeatedly bent during transport is not an accuracy upgrade over a properly maintained connected system.

Support the sheet beyond the first half

Walk through the operation while the saw is disconnected. Check that the sheet remains stable near the far end and that the offcut has support throughout. Position yourself so the cut does not require leaning over the saw or stepping around an obstruction halfway along. Route the hose and cord where they can follow without dragging on the track. A support arrangement that feels comfortable at the starting edge may become awkward when your hands reach the middle of a full sheet.

Preserve one reliable dimension

For a long rip, mark the intended retained dimension at both ends using a verified reference edge. Check whether the original sheet is square before using its edge as a measuring baseline. After securing the rail, recheck its position rather than assuming clamping left it unchanged. If you are making several panels, label their reference edges and sequence the cuts to preserve those references. Repeatedly measuring from an unverified factory edge can create consistent-looking parts that do not fit the assembly.

Inspect the whole cut, including the joint area

Use a suitable straight reference along the finished edge and look for a localized change near a rail connection. Compare width at the beginning and end, then inspect for chipping or burn that starts where the hose caught or the saw hesitated. Those locations provide useful clues. A straightedge cannot tell you everything about surface quality, and a smooth-looking edge does not prove straightness. Diagnose the actual pattern before buying another blade or replacing a rail that may only need correct setup.
