Milwaukee 2831 vs Makita XPS01: Cordless Track Saws

One battery system decision comes before the rail

The 2831 belongs to Milwaukee M18, while the XPS01 uses Makita’s two-pack 18V LXT arrangement. This difference changes the number of packs to have ready and how you share them with other tools. It does not, by itself, establish which saw cuts faster.

Count available suitable batteries, charging positions and competing tools on a typical job. A saw that fits the brand on your drill can still require additional battery investment for the intended workload. Check the manufacturer’s recommended setup rather than treating every pack as equivalent.

Mobile cabinet work exposes the whole package

A cordless saw may be used in a driveway, an unfinished room or a temporary cutting area. Write down what must travel with it: rail, clamps, support, charger, spare packs and extraction equipment. The saw body is only one part of that load.

If all your other equipment is M18, the Milwaukee may simplify that packing list. If your working stock of batteries is already LXT, the Makita can reduce duplication. For a first cordless platform, compare the complete project rather than choosing on the initial bare-tool price.

Do not compare unmatched runtime claims

A stated number of cuts or linear feet depends on sheet thickness, material, blade, battery and test procedure. Different advertising demonstrations cannot establish an equal-condition winner. The same caution applies to no-load speed: it does not describe finished edge quality or time under load.

For your planning, determine how often you can recharge and how much continuous cutting the project requires. A practical charging routine can matter more than a headline figure measured under conditions unlike your own.

Keep rail fit and collection in the decision

Check the rail family and exact accessories offered for each saw. A kit name may include a case and battery but omit the rail. Do not assume all items visible in a promotional image are included in the selected package.

Dust collection also remains part of cordless work. A hose can still follow the saw even when there is no power cable. Compare the required connection and hose route before treating either arrangement as completely free of trailing equipment.

A two-person shop needs a different battery basket

Suppose one person sizes panels while another fastens cabinets with cordless tools. Batteries that can be shared in a solo workshop may then be unavailable at the same time. Build the proposed purchase around that overlap. For XPS01, account for its two-pack arrangement; for 2831, account for a suitable M18 pack plus the charging schedule. This is a logistics calculation, not a runtime prediction. It avoids the common mistake of pricing a bare saw against batteries that are already occupied elsewhere.

A useful reason to choose each saw

Shortlist the 2831 when a suitable M18 battery and charging setup is already doing useful work in your shop. Shortlist the XPS01 when the LXT two-battery arrangement integrates well with the equipment you maintain. For either, confirm that the exact on-rail cutting depth and bevel capacity meet the material.

If switching platforms, identify the tangible benefit that pays for duplicate power accessories. Without that benefit, an existing compatible ecosystem can be the rational tie-breaker. The recommendation is about system fit, not a claim that owning one brand guarantees a better cut.
